happy new year everyone!
seen at joelle’s:
1. What did you do in 2004 that you’d never done before?
married john, went to my grandma’s funeral, drove home for the holidays.
2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
i don’t do resolutions.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
two girls at work, y, and numerous cousins (i’m not kidding when i say numerous – my dad’s family is HUGE). my ovaries are doing backflips as i type.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
my grandmother on my mom’s side, my great aunt, and a cousin on my dad’s side that i hadn’t seen in a while but was fond of as a child.
5. What countries did you visit?
just the good ole u.s. i didn’t even get down to mexico this year.
6. What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004?
savings. a thriving freelance writing business. a new digital camera. more time to write for me.
7. What dates from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
feb 29, 2004 – my wedding
sept 10, 2004 – grandma died
dec 24, 2004 – i met my great-niece
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
besides settling down and actually marrying the big lug? (i was the delay, i think. you could probably call me skittish, but i think that name is taken. heh.)
finally figuring out what i want, for real.
9. What was your biggest failure?
the year’s not over yet – there’s still time.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
just a really nasty cold that knocked me on my ass for several days.
okay, here’s the info if you’re still having spam comment problems.
i found the script info via a google search, but couldn’t download the file via geeksblog. it appears to be the same file that you can get on the mt plugin site, but i haven’t compared them. after a little more searching, it turns out that lomara has a copy on her site, which i used, following geeksblog’s instructions.
it was very simple, especially since i want to close comments on all of my blogs past a certain amount of time. i saw other notes that david raynes’ plugin has other options, so you may want to compare the two. but geeksblog’s worked for me because i needed simple. i didn’t leave it on my server, though, because it contains sensitive information. i’ll load it and run it as i need it. it may need adjustment now that i’ve changed my comments file name.
there’s some great information about combating spam on learning mt.
i highly recommend that you rename mt-comments.cgi. if the bots can’t find it, they can’t abuse it. my webhost sent me very simple instructions and they worked like a charm. i’m going to **** out the name i used. just insert the name of your choice that will indicate your comments file and use that name in these two places.
1) Rename mt-comments.cgi to mt****.cgi
2) Edit your mt.cfg, find the line that says:
# CommentScript mt-comments.pl
and change it to read:
3) Rebuild your Blog Files.
it really was that easy and my comments worked right away. my spammer, however, was gone. yay! if you have any questions at all, please let me know.
it snowed for about 5 minutes. i think we may have a white christmas. *gulp* well… as long as we don’t get stuck, it’ll be fun. hope everyone’s looking forward to the holiday! stockings are stuffed, presents are wrapped. we’re just enjoying the time with family. hugs to all.
christmas letter 2004 . . . coming soon to a pdf near you.
Here it is! Take a look if you’d like to read it (it’ll probably be quicker to save as). It’s what I’ll be passing along to family when we get there.
Tonight I have one last final and we pack up the car after that so we can leave at ass o’clock Friday morn. I doubt that I’ll update until we get back. So, have a wonderful time celebrating whatever you celebrate, enjoy any time off you have, hug your family close, and I’ll see you on the flip side.
found the script that closes comments after a period of time. finally. hunted and hunted to find one that was straightforward to a barely-techie like me. i’ll post links and thanks later, but for now, at least i’m not getting 50 spams an hour on very old entries. i knew i’d have to do it eventually, but this forced me to take care of it NOW. ugh. happy holidays to you, too, fuckers (spamdongs).
just got hit by almost 300 spam comments. first time. guess it was bound to happen, but i don’t know when i’ll have time to deal with it. not even sure how to at this point. feh.
my temp solution is to remove the comments link, but i don’t know if that even helps with these auto programs. sigh.
i took some candy around to everyone yesterday – some brownies and snowballs that the kids helped make this weekend. i took the rest back to my office to hand out later, wanting to wait until my boss is back in so she could get some.
uh, somebody snuck in when i wasn’t there and took some more because there are only 2 things of snowballs left. hello, is it just me or is it rude to go back into my office, uncover the candy, and take more after i went around and offered a little to everyone? i’m rationing it out for a reason. when i’m done, i’ll sit it on the counter for the greedy ones to gobble up.
seriously, was that rude? cuz it irked me.
i think we spent 10 hours making cookies yesterday. i’m tired. but thank gawd for my kitchenaid mixer.
and if i never make another sugar cookie with tinted frosting, i’ll still die happy.
i made coffee this morning. i go to the fridge and … there’s no coffeemate. i rummage around … i thought we had a big bottle, but no, that’s at work.
oh wait, we just finished a big bottle. oh no, now what will i do? rummage, rummage, rummage. eggnog? no, that’s expired. shit. need to throw that out. rummage, rummage. milk! damn, that’s expired. wait, i’ll take a tiny taste … nah, tastes too risky for coffee. crap. i’ll check the larder! (that’s the pantry or food cabinet for the rest of you.) maybe we have powdered something or other. ahhhhhh! i can’t drink my coffee black. j threw out the powdered stuff because it was one big block. damn, i just made some and now i can’t drink it! wait, the errand runner is here and the store is close. i’ll send her! ah, i’m saved! sweet elixir of life, you’re almost mine!
